New Zealand-born, UK-based artist and designer Frederick Worrell displays his thought-provoking and visually stunning convex mirror paintings in a retrospective exhibition that offers a glimpse into his artistic journey and the evolution of his workflow and processes.
About the artist (in his own words)
My ancestral connections include affiliations with Ko Manatu whatatutu, Ko Te Ngawiri te Marae, Ko Rawiri Tamanui te Tipuna, Ko Ngā Ariki Kaipūtahi Iwi, and Ko Ai Tanga a Makaki te Hupo, grounding my work in a rich cultural context. I hold degrees in Interior Design and Architectural Studies, further augmenting my artistic endeavours.
With a diverse skill set encompassing various mediums and techniques, my artistic journey draws inspiration from prominent figures such as Basquiat, Jeff Koon, Picasso, and Anish Kapoor. Over the course of my career, I have produced a substantial body of work, reflecting my passion for both art and design.
A recent accomplishment includes the design of Wharenui Harikoa, a contemporary whanau conceived for global exhibitions, completed in collaboration with the talented duo Lissy and Rudi Robinson Cole. This ground-breaking project will be unveiled to the public at the Waikato Museum on December 1st.
As a father of two, I actively engage with my local community as an artist, teacher, and designer. My commitment to community involvement aligns with my artistic philosophy, fostering a symbiotic relationship between creativity and community.
Internationally recognized for my award-winning alcohol ink convex mirror paintings, I had the honour of representing New Zealand at the 2022-2023 Asian Art Biennale. Additionally, I was the proud recipient of the esteemed Joan Kinder Salver Award for Art Innovation in 2022. The New Zealand High Commission London also commissioned a body of my work in the same year, reflecting the essence of Aotearoa for their offices and staff.
