In a landmark celebration of one of Australia’s most important artists, Emily Kam Kngwarray will be the focus of two major exhibitions in London – beginning at Pace Gallery (6 June – 8 August 2025), followed by a large-scale presentation at Tate Modern (10 July 2025 – 11 January 2026).
Renowned internationally, Kngwarray was a senior Anmatyerre woman from the Utopia region of Central Australia. Her late-life entry into the world of painting – beginning in her late seventies – resulted in more than 3,000 canvases in just eight years. Her powerful, expressive works are both deeply personal and profoundly connected to Country, conveying ancestral knowledge and spiritual engagement with the land through vivid abstraction.
This is the first major presentation of Kngwarray’s work in Europe, developed in collaboration with the National Gallery of Australia. The exhibitions will feature a wide array of textiles, monumental paintings, film, and audio, offering audiences an immersive experience of her legacy.
From early batik works to expansive canvases alive with gesture and meaning, Kngwarray’s work radiates the authority, wisdom and creative force of a singular artist whose vision is inseparable from the land she called home.
