New Zealand filmmaker Paloma Schneideman's debut feature Big Girls Don't Cry arrives in UK cinemas this November, following a successful international festival run that began at Sundance earlier this year.
Set in rural New Zealand during the summer of 2006, the film follows 14-year-old Sid (Ani Palmer) as she navigates friendship, first love, identity and the awkward uncertainties of adolescence. Drawn towards a group of older teenagers, Sid begins experimenting with different versions of herself in a world of MSN Messenger, pop culture and emerging sexual curiosity.
Written and directed by Schneideman, and executive-produced by fellow New Zealand filmmaker Jane Campion, the film also stars Noah Taylor and Rain Spencer. It premiered at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival, screened at BFI Flare in London and won the Grand Prix at France's Biarritz Nouvelles Vagues Film Festival.
UK audiences can catch a special preview screening at Curzon Bloomsbury on Sunday 8 November at 5.30pm, followed by a Q&A with Schneideman hosted by filmmaker Molly Manning Walker. Further preview Q&As are scheduled in Brighton on 9 November and Bermondsey on 11 November, ahead of the wider UK cinema release on 27 November.
