New Zealand bass Jonathan Lemalu appointed Deputy Head of Vocal & Opera at the Royal College of Music
FANZA is delighted to celebrate the appointment of New Zealand bass Jonathan Lemalu as Deputy Head of Vocal & Opera at London’s prestigious Royal College of Music (RCM).
A Grammy Award-winning artist and RCM alumnus, Jonathan has graced many of the world’s great opera stages and concert halls, earning international acclaim for both his performances and recordings - including Gramophone’s Debut Disc of the Year.
Since returning to the College as a Vocal Studies professor in 2023, Jonathan has been a passionate mentor to the next generation of singers. In his new role, he joins Head of Vocal & Opera Audrey Hyland, Director of Opera Michael Rosewell, and newly appointed Assistant Head Mark Austin, completing the faculty’s leadership team.
Jonathan said: “It is a privilege to accept the role of Deputy Head with an esteemed Vocal & Opera Department and leadership team, of which I have a deep respect and admiration as both alumnus and colleague. I’m proud to support and advocate for our faculty and students as they grow, create, and empower their own unique academic and artistic journeys at the RCM.”
Andrew Moore, Artistic Director of the RCM, praised Jonathan and Mark’s commitment to nurturing young talent: “Both bring strong commitments to guiding young singers alongside their performing careers, together with their understanding of the highest international standards.”
FANZA congratulates Jonathan on this richly deserved appointment - a testament to his artistry, leadership, and the exceptional contribution of New Zealand artists to the UK’s cultural life.
