New Zealand Youth Choir Crowned Choir of the World 2025

The New Zealand Youth Choir has taken home one of the highest accolades in global choral performance, winning Choir of the World 2025 at the prestigious Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod in Wales.

Comprised of around 50 singers aged 18 to 25, the choir impressed international judges with a powerful performance that wove together waiata, kapa haka, and traditional choral repertoire - a rich and dynamic expression of Aotearoa’s cultural identity.

The honour comes on the heels of another major triumph just days earlier at the European Choir Games in Denmark, where the ensemble earned the Grand Prix of Nations with a commanding score of 97.5 in the Folklore category.

Judges praised the group as “the true spirit of Aotearoa,” and their unique sound and stage presence has resonated deeply across Europe this season.

Speaking on the achievement, Labour Arts, Culture and Heritage spokesperson Rachel Boyack said:

"These outstanding young singers are incredible ambassadors for Aotearoa New Zealand on the world stage. I've been lucky to see the choir perform this year, including at Waitangi on Waitangi Day, and it is incredible to see how much they've achieved. I am hugely proud of every one of them."

This is the first time the New Zealand Youth Choir has claimed the Choir of the World title since 1999, marking a historic moment for the choir and a resounding international recognition of Aotearoa’s musical excellence.
