Aotearoa New Zealand artist Areez Katki has been awarded the 2026 Gasworks residency for an artist from New Zealand, taking up an 11-week placement at the leading London contemporary arts organisation this autumn.
Katki works across embroidery, textiles, installation, sound, writing and performance, exploring themes including memory, inherited knowledge, queer identity and storytelling.
During the residency, Katki will continue developing An Internal Dissenter Who Remains in Relation, a new performance and moving-image work examining inheritance, ritual and the relationship between the sacred and the everyday.
Born in Mumbai, Katki lives and works between Berlin, Auckland and Mumbai and studied at the University of Auckland and Victoria University of Wellington. Their work has been exhibited internationally across Aotearoa New Zealand, Asia, Europe and North America.
The residency is delivered through a partnership between Gasworks, the Jan Warburton Charitable Trust and the Office for Contemporary Art Aotearoa.
