Australian singer-songwriter Darren Hanlon tours the UK and Ireland this summer with Walmajarri elder and acclaimed desert-blues artist Kankawa Nagarra.
The tour follows Kankawa’s invitation to perform at WOMAD, where she brings her powerful original music to UK audiences after her Australian Music Prize-winning album Wirlmarni. Recorded on Country and moving between blues, gospel, country and Indigenous language, the album introduced many listeners to a remarkable artist whose songs carry deep feeling, memory and cultural knowledge.
Darren Hanlon, a much-loved Australian songwriter and storyteller in his own right, produced and recorded Wirlmarni and runs the label on which it was released, Flippin Yeah Records. For these shows, he joins Kankawa on the road, bringing together his warm, observational songwriting with her extraordinary life story and desert-blues sound.
The tour includes a WOMAD appearance, followed by a run of intimate UK and Ireland dates through late July and August, including London’s The Lexington and Brighton’s Folklore Rooms.
