Part contemporary art exhibition, part fully playable mini golf course, The Art of Mini Golf arrives at Battersea Arts Centre this summer with nine artist-designed holes created by leading women artists from around the world.
Commissioned by RISING Melbourne and supported at BAC by House of Oz, the exhibition explores the rebellious history of mini golf through play, imagination and contemporary art. Visitors are invited to pick up a putter and move through a series of bold, surprising and inventive works that reimagine the familiar game as an immersive artistic experience.
The project takes inspiration from mini golf’s origins in 19th-century Scotland, where women who were excluded from “real” golf courses created their own putting-only course and refused to stay on the sidelines.
The exhibition features work by artists including Miranda July, Kaylene Whiskey, Saeborg, Delaine Le Bas, Natasha Tontey, BKTHERULA with Kate Miller, Soda Jerk, Pat Brassington and Danielle Brathwaite-Shirley, whose new commission appears as part of the UK premiere.
Australian connections run throughout the project, from its origins with RISING Melbourne to the involvement of acclaimed Australian artists including Kaylene Whiskey, Soda Jerk and Pat Brassington, and the support of House of Oz, which champions Australian creative work on international stages and screens.
Playful, provocative and unexpected, The Art of Mini Golf offers audiences a chance to experience contemporary art not from a distance, but by stepping inside it — one hole at a time.
