FANZA is delighted to share news of a new exhibition by New Zealand–British painter Sarah Jane Moon, Nature / Nurture, this month at The Heatherley School of Fine Art, London.
Six years in the making, this powerful body of work explores identity, queerness and connection to the natural world, bringing together two interwoven series: striking large-scale portraits of influential LGBTQIA+ figures, and vibrant studies of Aotearoa’s native birds, flora and landscapes.
Spanning hemispheres and the gender spectrum, Nature / Nurture celebrates multiplicity and belonging. It asks how we are shaped by the worlds we inhabit - both natural and social - and how queerness, migration and creative practice challenge fixed ideas of home.
Sarah Jane Moon is a New Zealand–British artist known for her bold, expressive portraits that explore gender, identity and community. Her work is held in major collections including the National Portrait Gallery, University of Cambridge, University of Oxford, Soho House, and the Alexander Turnbull Library. She is also Chair of the Contemporary British Portrait Painters.
