Courtney Barnett returns with new single: Stay In Your Lane

Australian singer-songwriter Courtney Barnett is back with Stay In Your Lane, her first new single since 2023 - and a bold, exhilarating return to form for one of Australia’s most distinctive musical voices.

The track signals the start of a new creative chapter. Propelled by a raucous guitar riff and Barnett’s unmistakable drawl, Stay In Your Lane bristles with the wit, grit and emotional candour that have defined her work since Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit.

The single arrives with a cinematic video by filmmaker Alex Ross Perry, casting Barnett in a surreal surgical ward wearing a blood-stained hospital gown. Around her, mysterious patients sit in silence, watching. It’s a striking visual world that expands on the song’s tension and momentum.

Stay In Your Lane follows Barnett's 2023 instrumental album End Of The Day, originally created as the score for Anonymous Club, Danny Cohen’s intimate documentary portrait of the artist. It also follows her 2021 album Things Take Time, Take Time, praised for its softness, lyricism and quietly joyful focus on everyday moments.

According to a press statement, the new single “kicks off her next musical chapter”, with more news expected soon.

For now, Stay In Your Lane is a thrilling reminder of Barnett’s singular ability to turn self-reflection into something loud, sharp and alive.

The single is available now on all major platforms.
