Australian artist Amy Wright presents a new body of paintings at Circle Contemporary in Cornwall this autumn, continuing her exploration of landscape, botanical forms, colour and pattern.
The works draw inspiration from Wright’s recent visit to Joshua Tree in California, where the desert landscape, native plants and changing light offered a new visual language for her practice. Species including buckwheat, saltbush, cholla and desert thistle appear across paintings that translate the textures and atmosphere of the landscape through layered colour, pattern and mark-making.
Based in Victoria, Australia, Wright has a background spanning painting and drawing, textile design and floral artistry, with formal training at the Victorian College of the Arts and RMIT. Her paintings combine close observation of the natural world with looser, decorative surfaces built from texture, collage-like layering and rhythmic pattern.
Her work often moves between representation and abstraction, with densely layered foliage and fragmented surfaces recalling both botanical illustration and textile design. New Works runs at Circle Contemporary from 26 September to 31 October.
